Donald Trump’s Republican Party suffered a huge wipeout in Tuesday’s midterm elections, with the GOP losing control of both houses of Congress, Democrats having an even bigger night than pollsters had predicted, and several of Trump’s own hand-picked candidates suffering big defeats. Trump had asked voters to act as if he were on the ballot, and it appears they did exactly that.

When reached after most of the results were in, the president didn’t sound very happy.

According to The Independent, Trump was reached by Fox News and declared of the Democrats, “They finally got it.”

“Congratulations to the Democrats; they did a good job,” Trump said in the Fox interview, which the newspaper said was delivered in a “slurring” manner.

“They’ve been looking for this one for 11 years, and they finally got it,” he added.

He also noted that, contrary to his admonitions to act like he was on the ballot, he was not, in fact, on the ballot.

“I don’t view it as a hit on me,” he told Fox News after midnight on Tuesday. “I think we’ve had the greatest two years in the history of the presidency in terms of the economy, in terms of all the things we’ve done…”

Trump will now face the final two years of his presidency with a hostile Congress, armed with subpoena power and the ability to investigate him and his administration on various fronts. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), two men Trump has long disliked, will almost certainly serve as Senate Majority Leader and House Speaker, respectively.

“They didn’t like the candidates and some of the candidates I endorsed fought me,” Trump said of his voters, in the Fox interview. “In other cases, they just didn’t inspire the people to get out and vote.”

Trump had also been critical of Fox and its ratings, even earlier that same night.
