Donald Trump has never been a fan of the media, especially outlets that report negatively on him. On Friday, he appeared to threaten two major news networks.

In speaking to the press in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump criticized CNN and MSNBC.

“You know, we really need honest journalism, and we don’t have,” the president said. “When you have a CNN- you have to watch these people every once in a while just to see where they’re coming from, and it’s so dishonest. MSNBC is, I think, probably worse, and they’re both doing horribly in the ratings. I think they’re gonna be turned off; they’re not doing any ratings.”

It doesn’t appear that there’s any chance of CNN or MSNBC being “turned off.” Neither company’s parent company seems interested in doing that, although C0mcast recently spun off its cable channel assets, including MSNBC. And no, Trump would not have the power to “turn off” the networks’ licenses himself since they are on cable and, therefore, not regulated by the government like cable channels.

At the same event, Trump also ripped The New York Times, denying their recent report that Elon Musk would be brought into briefings in the event of a war with China.

“If you read what is out of The New York Times, it’s such a dishonest newspaper, it’s is such garbage. It used to be called all the news that’s fit to print; well, it’s all the news that’s not fit to print. They have fake sources or they don’t have sources,” Trump told reporters.

Also this week, a bogus conspiracy theory re-surfaced, which implied that CNN covered no Trump rallies live in the 2024 campaign cycle besides the one in Butler, Pa., at which he was shot- implying that CNN had some advanced knowledge of the assassination attempt.

This has been thoroughly debunked; CNN did indeed cover other 2024 Trump rallies live, and they specifically had cameras at that one simply because it had been hinted that Trump might announce his vice presidential pick that day. Indeed, J.D. Vance was announced as the choice just two days later.

But many sharing the talking point, armed with “results” from Grok, haven’t entirely given up the ghost:
