President Donald Trump spent much of the last year calling New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani a communist, while threatening more than once to cut off federal aid to New York City, in the event of a victory by the Muslim Democratic Socialist candidate. Mamdani, for his part, has called Trump a fascist more than once.

It was therefore somewhat surprising that the president and Mamdani, who was elected New York’s next mayor, had a friendly chat at the White House on Friday, which continued in front of the press.

Per a CNN analysis published Friday, the meeting was “bizarrely chummy.”

“Reporters kept peppering the two men with questions, pointing to their differences and the awful things they’d said about one another,” CNN said. “But the two kept batting away the chance to throw down, emphasizing their common ground.”

Trump declared in front of the press that “I think he’s going to surprise some conservative people, actually,” and “We agree on a lot more than I would’ve thought.”

Then, after the meeting, Trump posted photos of himself with the incoming mayor on his Truth Social account:

“I can tell you that there were more New Yorkers who voted for President Trump in the most recent presidential election because of that focus on cost of living,” Mamdani said in the meeting, “and I’m looking forward to working together to deliver on that affordability agenda.”
There were, however, quite a few people on social media, from all over the political spectrum, who were surprised at the chummy confab.
