Anyone who has visited the Oval Office, or even seen it on TV, during Donald Trump’s second term has likely noticed that it looks different- with a lot more gold accents, and a great deal more like one of Trump’s personal properties, than the longtime seat of government for the executive branch.
“Democrats, preservationists, and historians slammed Trump as a philistine,” CNN said of the remodel, which has continued more recently with his tearing down of the East Wing to build a ballroom.
“Over the months of his administration, the number of gold trophies and vases littered across the mantlepiece have multiplied and there are now even gold coasters with Trump’s name on them,” The Guardian wrote of the makeover. Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, has said that the new look makes her want to “die of shame.”
On Monday, however, Trump bragged about how the new Oval Office looks.
“Look how beautiful the Oval Office is, now. Many of those great paintings of past Presidents were in the vaults for over 100 years. Now they are for everyone to enjoy!,” the president said on Truth Social, over a picture of himself in the Oval.

However, many people on social media had some other opinions about the new look, calling it “tacky” and mocking the president for it.

Looks like trash, then he defaces hundreds of years of history to put cheap plastic sprayed with gold paint & tries to pass it off as 24kt gold. He then rips off the entire east end of the Whitehouse to put in a Ballroom that is not needed to complete the Russian Whorehouse look.

Trump is the tackiest bastard on the planet. Same spot 7 months ago vs today. pic.twitter.com/vIZZnoKiTB

This is classy, American. Trump’s approach of caking everything in gold leaf and jamming 400 ornate golden fixtures on every square inch is incredibly tacky, and appears to be a pathetic attempt to pretend he’s some kind of European emperor. https://t.co/e4PNEpsN4r

And if you wonder why Trump was never accepted by old money in NY or in Palm Beach,
this is Exhibit 834,435.
Tacky, vulgar, flashy, showy, low-brow, gawdy.
Always has been, always will be. https://t.co/iTqOTsBuM1
