Former President Joe Biden’s office announced Sunday afternoon that the former president has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” the statement said. The finding of a “nodule” had been disclosed last week. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

The former president’s family is reviewing treatment options, according to the family.

Biden, whose son Beau died of cancer in 2015, launched an initiative during his presidency called the “Cancer Moonshot,” which was geared towards making progress toward curing cancer.

While the current president, Donald Trump, isn’t always known for accepting social niceties, he did issue a warm statement on the occasion of the news.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis,” Trump said on Truth Social. “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Warm wishes rolled in from most major luminaries of American politics in both parties, including Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris:

The news of Biden’s diagnosis comes as journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson prepare to release a new book, Original Sin, which alleges that Biden and his team had hidden the extent of his physical and mental decline throughout his presidency, including during his abortive re-election campaign in 2024.
