Tacky, but he will enjoy it

Donald Trump was recently announced as the recipient of a completely made-up peace prize on Friday, created by FIFA in what many see as an obvious attempt to flatter him.

The award, called the “FIFA Peace Prize–Football Unites the World,” was revealed during the 2026 World Cup finals draw at the Kennedy Center. FIFA never confirmed the recipient in advance, but with Trump’s constant presence at FIFA events this year, it was hardly a surprise.

“The annual prize recognizes an individual who has taken extraordinary action for peace, and in doing so, helped unite people across the globe,” said the narrator of a video shown before the elaborate on-stage presentation.

Trump, 79, called it “truly one of the great honors of my life” in a speech where he quickly pivoted to bragging about World Cup ticket sales and the wars he claimed to have solved. “The world is a safer place now,” he said. “The United States one year ago was not doing too well, and now I have to say we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world, and we’re going to keep it that way.”

Trump was welcomed on stage by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who praised him lavishly. “You definitely deserve the first FIFA Peace Prize for your action, for what you have obtained in your way, but you have obtained it in an incredible way. You can always count as a president on my support,” Infantino said.

Trump insisted he had not been told he would receive the prize ahead of time, yet he bragged about solving eight wars and added, “another one coming.” The prize was created shortly after he was passed over for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize—a prize he campaigned intensely to win and still mentions frequently.

Infantino even lobbied for Trump to get the Nobel Peace Prize, but when that failed, he created his own award to honor the president he has consistently courted. Infantino has gushed over Trump at nearly every opportunity, often bringing trophies for the gold-loving president to admire during their appearances together, including in the Oval Office.

Trump has embraced the spotlight with his usual flair. At the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, he stood among Chelsea players as they lifted the trophy. Infantino even handed him a spare winners’ medal, which Trump pocketed.

His involvement in the 2026 World Cup has been equally theatrical. The event, set to take place in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, has Trump overseeing a special task force led by Andrew Giuliani, son of his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
