Donald Trump, it has been established over the years, very much wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize. It may stem from his longtime enemy, Barack Obama, winning the prize early on in his presidency, but Trump has been motivated by the idea of winning that prize in many of his foreign policy decisions, while also complaining out loud that his actions have not led to such an award.
Nobel Peace Prizes are not often bestowed on people who have begged for them, or who have complained loudly about not having received them. But one dynamic has emerged in Trump’s second term: Many world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have sought to curry favor with Trump by nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize. And because the bar for such a nomination is very low — essentially any official with a government or an NGO can nominate anyone for it — many people have done so for Trump.

“Several of the governments backing Trump’s nomination—including Rwanda, Israel, Gabon, Azerbaijan, and Cambodia—are led by authoritarian figures, military juntas, or leaders facing international arrest warrants,” Newsweek reported.

But now, there’s a report that Trump has called one government official to push for that elusive Nobel.
Per Politico EU, which cited Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, Trump “called Norway’s Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg out of the blue” in July to discuss tariffs, as well as Trump’s Nobel campaign. The Nobel prizes are presented in Norway, although it’s not clear what if any pull Stoltenberg would have in Nobel decisions.

“It is true that President Trump called me a few days before his conversation with Prime Minister. Several of the president’s staff members also participated in the conversation, including Treasury Secretary Bessent and Trade Representative Greer,” Stoltenberg told Politico in a statement.
The reports come as Trump is set to meet Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with an effort to end the more than three-year war between Russia and Ukraine.
“In the run-up to the summit, the Nobel prize has appeared to be top of mind in Trump’s circle. Without prompting, [White House Press Secretary Karoline] Leavitt portrayed Trump as deserving of the prize in three out of her four press briefings in July,” NBC News reported.
