Donald Trump, famously, fired FBI Director James Comey in 2017, taking extraordinary action to remove a political enemy. After appointing Comey’s successor, Christopher Wray, Trump spent the rest of his presidency attacking Wray on various fronts. Wray, for his part, resigned on the eve of Trump’s return to the presidency, and Trump appointed Kash Patel, a longtime loyalist of his both inside and outside government, as the new director.

Now, a new report said Trump is considering removing another FBI Director.

MS NOW reported Tuesday that Trump is “considering removing Kash Patel as FBI director in the coming months, as he and his top aides have grown increasingly frustrated by the unflattering headlines Patel has recently generated.” The report, citing “three people with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity in order to speak freely,” said that Trump is upset about various bad headlines, including those related to “his stewardship of bureau resources, including his girlfriend’s security detail and use of a government jet, and for his squabbles with other Trump loyalists.”

Patel is also widely believed to have mishandled the bureau’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Trump, the report said, is considering  FBI official Andrew Bailey as the replacement for Patel, who was confirmed for a ten-year term as FBI director but, if the story is correct, won’t even make it through his first year.

The White House issued a statement to MS NOW offering a limited denial of the report.

“President Trump has assembled the most talented and impressive Administration in history and they are doing an excellent job carrying out the President’s agenda. FBI Director Patel is a critical member of the President’s team and he is working tirelessly to restore integrity to the FBI.”

Trump himself defended Patel to the press.

“I do have confidence in Kash, a lot of confidence, and the DOJ,” he said when a reporter asked about the FBI director’s status.
