It’s one of those moments in the Trump era in which a line has been crossed in a way that it had never been crossed before: Yes, following an action by the federal government, a talk show host has been removed from the air.
The show is Jimmy Kimmel Live, the ABC late-night talk show hosted by comedian and frequent Trump critic Jimmy Kimmel, following comments Kimmel made about the man who shot conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
So what was that about cancel culture I used to hear? https://t.co/0KuWdZYBoL

Kimmel, earlier this week on his show, had stated that “The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said on the show. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

The comments came on Monday night’s show, at a time when the motives of the accused shooter, Tyler Robinson, remained relatively unknown.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, per CNN, dismissed Kimmel’s comments as “the sickest conduct possible,” and threatened to revoke station licenses. The FCC regulates the airwaves, which include the broadcast networks, but not cable or streaming. Still, the agency has not traditionally acted as a full-on censor that demands specific programming decisions.
By the end of the day on Wednesday, the station owner Nexstar announced that it would pull Kimmel’s show from the ABC channels it owns, and ultimately, ABC announced that it would yank the show indefinitely. And before long, Trump was gloating:
“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.”
To be clear: Kimmel’s show has, by all indications, been yanked temporarily and not permanently dropped.
NEW: Jimmy Kimmel was planning to address his Charlie Kirk remarks on tonight’s broadcast, and Disney/ABC leadership elected to hit pause amid Nexstar/FCC pressure. Disney/ABC leadership hopes to have matter resolved and have the show return, per sources familiar.@PuckNews

A lot of social media users had shocked reactions to this turn of events:
“Throwing shade” is protected by the First Amendment, and in no arena is it more protected than the political one.
Government punishment of political criticism or insult is unconstitutional and un-American. https://t.co/fNMezGQe2n pic.twitter.com/Tf75bE7UiK

I’m old enough to remember when the conservative/free speech answer to a comedian who said something cruel about the president was to boycott them. Shun them. Start your own TV show. It was liberals who went crying to the government and demanded fairness.
Times change, I guess.

The Jimmy Kimmel cancellation is actually insane. He is a late night host and comic and the joke he made was hardly even edgy in today’s political culture. We are, again, in a terrible place for speech.

Charlie Kirk turned out to be worth more dead than alive for the conservative movement. https://t.co/dPTRDe0eO2
