Donald Trump and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it’s clear, have never been friends. In Trump’s first term as president, Pelosi was the Democratic leader in the House, first as House Minority Leader and later as Speaker. Pelosi, who sat behind Trump during State of the Union addresses, was once photographed tearing Trump’s speech in half after it was over. She was the House Speaker during the January 6, 2021, riot, and served as something of a face of the Democratic opposition on that day. And Pelosi, while originally opposed to doing so in the first instance, oversaw both impeachments of Trump in his first term.

After Trump left office, the two continued to feud, and when a man spouting QAnon and Pizzagate conspiracy theories attacked Pelosi’s husband in their San Francisco home in 2022, many in the MAGA coalition spread false, salacious rumors about the attack. In Trump’s second term, Pelosi is no longer part of the House leadership, but has remained part of Congress as a public figure.

This week, Pelosi announced that she will retire from Congress after her current term, bringing her nearly 40-year political career to a close. Pelosi served two different stints as the speaker of the House, the only woman ever to hold that position.

On Thursday, Fox News reporter Steve Doocy said on the air that he had “just chatted” with the president, and when asked about Pelosi’s retirement, he replied, “the retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America. She was evil, corrupt, and only focused on bad things for our country.” Trump added that Pelosi, who stepped down from House leadership three years ago, was “rapidly losing control of her party.”

“I’m very honored she impeached me twice, and failed miserably twice,” the president continued. “Nancy Pelosi is a highly overrated politician.”

Pelosi, despite Trump’s assurances, has never been seriously investigated for any corruption-related crimes.
