President Donald Trump responded Wednesday after two National Guard soldiers were shot just blocks from the White House. He called the shooter an “animal” and praised the National Guard, military, and law enforcement for their service.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said both soldiers were critically wounded and taken to separate hospitals. He added that the suspect, who is also injured, “will pay a very steep price.”

“The National Guard and our law enforcement are truly great people,” he wrote. “I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is closely monitoring the situation. “The White House has been briefed and continues to follow developments,” she said.

Police confirmed that one suspect is in custody. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or a possible motive. A D.C. police spokesperson said officers are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.

Witnesses near Pennsylvania Avenue reported hearing gunfire and seeing emergency vehicles rush to the scene. “It was frightening,” said one resident who asked not to be named. “I saw the soldiers on the ground, and help came quickly.”

National Guard troops have been stationed in D.C. since August to support local law enforcement and patrol federal buildings and public areas. Hundreds remain on duty as part of heightened security measures across the capital.

Trump was not at the White House when the shooting occurred. He is spending Thanksgiving at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X asking the public to keep the injured soldiers in their thoughts. She said her department is coordinating with local authorities to gather more information.

Emergency crews secured the streets near the White House. Several blocks were temporarily closed, and residents were advised to stay indoors while authorities investigated.
