The president offered not-very-friendly condolences upon the passing of Hollywood director Rob Reiner, a sharp critic of his.

The shocking news broke Sunday night that Rob Reiner, a major Hollywood figure for decades, who directed such films as When Harry Met Sally, Misery, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men, had been found dead in his Brentwood home, along with his wife, Michele, a renowned photographer. It was reported by Monday morning that the couple’s son, Nick, had been arrested in connection with their deaths.

In addition to his work in movies and television, which also included acting, Reiner was long an outspoken liberal and a sharp critic of President Donald Trump. In 2024, he produced a documentary, God and Country, about the rise of Christian Nationalism, leading into Trump’s own rise.

On Monday morning, Trump responded on Truth Social to the news of Reiner’s passing, and in typical Trump fashion, he couldn’t resist the urge to get some digs in.

“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote, seemingly blaming Reiner’s death on his opposition to Trump.

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

The Trump post was somewhat shocking in its callousness, and for the need for Trump to make the tragic death of a beloved figure about himself. In addition, it followed an entire night of MAGA people on social media declaring that they don’t speak ill of the dead, unlike the way liberals all trashed Charlie Kirk after his passing. It would be difficult to find a Democratic elected official who posted something as cruel about Kirk’s death as Trump did about Reiner’s.

In addition, Michele Reiner, in her work as a photographer, had actually shot the book cover for Trump’s 1980s memoir, “The Art of the Deal,” but the president did not acknowledge that history in his screed about Reiner’s death.
