In a leaked letter sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, President Donald Trump tied his threats over Greenland to his anger at being passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He claimed he no longer felt obligated to prioritize peace after Norway failed to award him the prize last year, despite repeated explanations that the Nobel committee operates independently from the Norwegian government.
“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote. He added that peace would remain “predominant,” but said he could now focus on what he claimed was best for the United States.
That shift quickly turned toward Greenland.
Trump argued that the United States must control the Arctic island because Denmark cannot defend it from Russia or China. He dismissed Denmark’s long standing claim to the territory outright.

“Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway?” he wrote. “There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also.”
He then escalated the message even further.
“I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States,” Trump said. “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”
The letter drew swift pushback from world leaders and critics online.
Political commentator Ed Krassenstein called the message “insane,” adding, “This is why you don’t elect a narcissist to be your president. Is this what you voted for, Trump’s supporters?”

Norway confirmed the letter was real.
Støre said it followed an earlier text he had sent to Trump alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb. He again explained that Norway does not choose Nobel Peace Prize winners and never has.
Trump’s fixation on the prize has become a recurring grievance. Earlier this month, he claimed on Truth Social that he had “single handedly ENDED 8 WARS” and accused Norway of acting foolishly for denying him the award.
That claim unraveled further last week when the Nobel Foundation was forced to clarify that the Peace Prize cannot be transferred after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented Trump with her medal during a White House visit.
“Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared or transferred to others,” the Nobel institutions said. “The decision is final and stands for all time.”
