President Donald Trump faced another tense moment on Monday during a meeting with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele when CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins asked why his administration is refusing to follow a Supreme Court order to help return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador.
Collins reminded Trump, “You said if the Supreme Court said someone needed to be returned, you’d abide by that.”
Trump didn’t like the question. He cut her off and said, “Why don’t you just say, ‘Isn’t it wonderful that we’re keeping criminals out of our country?’” Then he added, “That’s why nobody watches you anymore. You have no credibility.”

So what happened with Kilmar Abrego Garcia?
Abrego Garcia is from El Salvador and lives in Maryland, USA. He was here legally and had protection because he was escaping gang violence. But last month, he was wrongly deported. And not just anywhere—he was sent to CECOT, one of the most dangerous prisons in El Salvador.
When the mistake was discovered, the Supreme Court told Trump’s team to help bring him back. But instead of obeying the court, Trump’s Department of Justice said the court has no power in this case. They now say it’s a matter of “international relations.”
In short, they’re refusing to follow the law.
During the meeting, President Bukele also spoke about the case. He said he wouldn’t return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. “How can I return him to the United States?” Bukele asked. “Like if I smuggle him into the United States?” He added, “Of course, I’m not going to do it. The question is preposterous. We’re not very fond of releasing terrorists.”
That shocked many people because Abrego Garcia is not a terrorist. His lawyers say he was wrongly deported and that he was only trying to stay safe.
The Supreme Court is one of the three branches of the U.S. government. The other two are the President and Congress. They are supposed to balance each other. If a president can ignore the Supreme Court, then the system breaks.
And instead of giving an answer, Trump made it all about the media. He insulted Collins and talked about ratings.
This story isn’t just about one reporter. It’s about respecting the law. The court said this man should come back. Trump said no. Kaitlan Collins was doing her job. The court was doing its job. But the president? He’s not doing his.
Right now, Abrego Garcia is still stuck in a dangerous prison while leaders argue about rules.
Normally, if the Supreme Court gives you an order, you follow it. That’s how democracy works—and it’s just common sense.
