Trump Sparks Mockery With Cringe-Worthy Library Blunder That Has Everyone Facepalming

Doesn't believe in libraries. Or reading, presumably.

On Monday, Eric Trump posted a two-minute video rendering of the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library on social media.

The structure is a glass skyscraper towering over the Miami skyline with “TRUMP” in capital letters near the top. Visitors enter through a gold arch bearing the presidential seal. Inside, a golden escalator. A replica Oval Office. A replica Rose Garden. A massive auditorium with a golden statue of Trump, fist raised. And a 747 that looks remarkably like the Qatar-gifted luxury jet parked on the first floor.

The video shows an American flag with 56 stars. The real number is 50.

Soon after, Trump stepped in to explain what the building actually is. “I don’t believe in building libraries or museums,” he told reporters. “It’s going to be most likely a hotel. It’s just a concept. Could be office, but it’s gonna most likely be a hotel with a beautiful building underneath and a 747 Air Force One in the lobby, which is gonna be a trick.”

A presidential library that is most likely a hotel on free public land was already a lot.

Trump saying he does not believe in libraries gave people even more to talk about.

Miami Dade College donated a 2.6-acre plot of prime downtown real estate valued at more than $67 million for the project. The land was being used as a parking lot. More than 100 members of the public showed up to oppose the transfer at a December board meeting. The trustees voted unanimously to give it away anyway. A judge dismissed the subsequent legal challenge.

The proposed site sits just south of the Freedom Tower, across from two museums, next to the Kaseya Center where the Miami Heat play, and facing PortMiami. The architect described it as a beacon visible to every cruise ship entering Miami Harbor.

Trump used the announcement to take a swing at Barack Obama’s library in Chicago.

“The Barack Hussein Obama one in Chicago is in not a good location and it’s a very unattractive building that’s seriously late and seriously over budget,” he said. His own building, he assured reporters, would be “on time, on budget, best location in Miami.”

The Obama Presidential Center is set to open June 18.
