Midterms at stake

With the midterms approaching, Trump is taking aim at rising Democratic stars while rallying supporters to fund his fight for GOP control.

In a late‑night fundraising email sent from what he said was the Oval Office, Trump singled out progressive lawmakers like Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez and Ilhan Omar, along with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

He warned that Democrats are “more unhinged, angry, and dangerous” than ever and claimed they were “hanging on by a thread,” urging Republicans to give money to his new “2026 MAGA Majority Defender Club.”

Trump portrayed the Democrats as desperate and on the brink of taking power in both the House and the Senate. His pitch cast routine fundraising as a fight for the future of the country, framing every donation as a way to stop what he called an “attack” on Republican rule.

The email leaned heavily on stark language, claiming that inaction would lead to disaster for the GOP. Trump told supporters that Democrats were counting on “silence” and “weakness,” a familiar tactic he has used in previous election cycles to motivate his base.

Trump’s push comes at a time when Republicans are building a massive war chest for the midterms.

MAGA‑aligned super PAC Make America Great Again Inc. (MAGA Inc.) entered 2026 with nearly $300 million available, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Big donors like tech and crypto figures have contributed millions, showing deep financial ties to Trump’s political operation.

The fundraising advantage is significant. Reports show that Republicans and their allied committees have far more cash on hand than Democrats as the campaign season begins in earnest. That financial gap could give the GOP an edge in close races across the country.

But Trump’s strategy takes a different turn. He is directing his campaign not only at Democrats but also at voters who feel left behind by politics. Some of his emails have echoed themes familiar to his supporters, such as attacks on what he calls “corrupt” institutions and warnings that the country is headed in the wrong direction without strong conservative leadership.

Progressive Democrats, meanwhile, have their own fundraising momentum. Lawmakers like Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez have pulled in millions through grassroots contributions and public appeals, particularly from small‑dollar donors.

AOC alone raised more than $15 million for her campaign in 2024, and she continued strong fundraising into 2025, showing her appeal among liberal supporters.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has also been a major fundraiser, helping propel the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to record numbers. As leader, Jeffries raised large sums to boost candidates up and down the ballot, reflecting broad donor support for Democratic efforts to reclaim control of Congress.
