It’s Christmas day, so leave it to former and upcoming President Donald Trump to fire off another tone-deaf and fact-free rant on his beloved Truth Social. I don’t know what it is about holidays that put him in such a sour mood but I think this may be one of his kookier rants.
I mean, Governor Justin Trudeau? Really? if memory serves me correctly, Trudeau is Canada’s prime minister. To be sure, liberals in Canada are none too happy with Trudeau at the moment and he is considering resigning at some point, but governor, he is not. He’s also not doing terribly well in the polls, Politico notes, and Trump should be able to identify with the prime minister’s plight, since he himself often tanks in polls.
As far as his comment about Chinese soldiers “who are lovingly but illegally operating the Panama canal,” well, he’s correct here. Sort of. Except Hong Kong doing most of the work here, not China. According to the U.S. Department of State Archive:
“The Government of Panama granted a concession to operate the ports of Balboa and Cristobal, on the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the Canal, respectively, to the Hong Kong company Hutcheson-Whampoa in 1996. Under the terms of the contract, Hutcheson-Whampoa does not own the ports, but rather operates them on behalf of the Government of Panama. The U.S. does not believe that the concession granted to Hutcheson-Whampoa represents a threat to the Canal. Several entities of the U.S. Government, including the Federal Maritime Commission and the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, have researched this issue extensively and have not uncovered any evidence to support a conclusion that the People’s Republic of China will be in a position to control Canal operations. The neutrality of the Canal and its operations are guaranteed by the “Neutrality Treaty& signed and ratified by the governments of the U.S. and Panama, and also by that Treaty’s protocol, to which 36 other countries are states party.”

He’s also off on another key point regarding the number of people who lost their lives while the canal was being built. Trump claims 38,000 people died. That’s a verifiably solid NOPE. 360Training reports that 30,000 people lost their lives during the building of this epic canal.
Then there’s his peculiar fascination with Greenland. The country is mineral-rich and I’m sure Trump would like to grab hold of that. But this is the only reason I can think of for him to be that obsessive. He claims we need it for “National Security purposes” but fails to say why. You can see this in the post below.
Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal (where we lost 38,000 people in its building 110 years ago), always making certain that the United States puts in Billions of Dollars in “repair”…

That’s why I think he’s a loon. Because he is. Social media users agree with me.

You really are out of your f***ing mind. What’s done is done. The ppl of Panama control the canal, and if they want the Chinese there, it’s none of our business. If Canada or Greenland wanted to be states, they would ask. Neither do

For being such an isolationist this dude sure is talking about taking over other countries/territories (Panama, Canada, Greenland so far). Very Putin-esque, one might say.

I suspect @technolocheese has a point. Undoubtedly Trump has sniffed out all that oil like a billionaire bloodhound. He knows where to find money and it’s why he’s so connected to Elon Musk right now.
That is until Musk pisses him off somehow. After all, he loves that phrase, “You’re fired!” and used it on severalDo members of his Cabinet during his first presidency. I suspect we’ll hear more of the same when he becomes president again on January 20, 2025.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
