Even five years after it happened, and even after he successfully returned to the presidency, Donald Trump still hasn’t given up on the (false) notion that he won the 2020 presidential election.
That continued on Thursday, during the president’s remarks at the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. The speech took place on the Ellipse, the same park near the White House, where Trump addressed his supporters on January 6, 2021.

Trump made a strange transition from talking about Jesus to addressing the 2020 election.

“With the birth of Jesus, human history turned from night to day. His word and his example call us to love one another, to serve one another, and to honor the sacred truth that every child is specially made in the image of God. For 250 years, think of it, our country is 250 years, this is a big year,” Trump said.
“I’m so happy that our presidency was delayed. Otherwise, I’d be sitting home watching television, not being invited. I would be extremely upset… See, if they didn’t rig the election, I would have been sitting. Can you imagine? I wouldn’t have any of them! And I probably wouldn’t have been invited! I would have been very upset by that.
But America has stood tall in part because millions of our citizens have heeded that call.”
It appeared to be Trump’s first public speech on the Ellipse since the day of the riot, nearly five years ago.
I’ve been wondering why the Trump administration had uncharacteristically shied away from saying anything about the alleged Jan. 6 pipe bomber’s political views and well… https://t.co/qQhp2RSoaK

There was another significant development this week, related to January 6: An arrest was finally made in connection with the attempted pipe bombings on that day. And per NBC News, the man arrested, Brian Cole Jr., “told the FBI he believed conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.” Cole has been cooperating with authorities.

Also on Thursday, the conservative website The Blaze, which earlier this fall had published a piece alleging that a female Capitol Police officer had been responsible for the bombs, has now retracted that story, in light of the arrests.
