Trump’s Approval Numbers Sink To ‘Perilous’ Level In Latest Poll

Public trust is running dry

Recently, new polls showed President Donald Trump’s approval rating has reached a perilous point, signaling trouble for him and the Republican Party.

CNN’s political director David Chalian said Trump is “underwater on every single issue tested, and there is no real strong suit.” This marks a sharp shift from his first term, when he could claim strength on the economy and hold wider support. Today, even his strongest arguments fail to sway many voters.

The CNN/SSRS poll, conducted Jan. 9–12 with 1,209 adults, shows only 39% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance. Most voters remain critical. Independents, a key group in elections, are especially concerned. Only 30% approve of his presidency, a number Chalian called “politically perilous for his party.”

Even the economy, once Trump’s strongest advantage, is not helping. Almost 50% of Americans say it is their top concern, yet only 30% see conditions as improving. Meanwhile, 55% say Trump’s policies are making the economy worse, and 58% think he overuses presidential power.

Trump’s core supporters remain loyal. Nearly 90% of Republicans approve, with about 50% strongly backing him. Outside his base, support is dropping. Only 30% of Latinos and adults under 35 approve, and just 26% of people of color. Among white Americans, 47% approve while 52% disapprove.

Other polls confirm the decline. A Jan. 12–13 Marist survey shows a net rating of –18, with 38% approval and 56% disapproval. Economist/YouGov reports 40% approve, 54% disapprove, net –14. AP-NORC finds 40% approval, 59% disapproval, net –19.

Trump’s approval has stayed stuck in the high 30s to low 40s throughout his second term. His rating is dropping among voters outside his base. Chalian warned this could threaten Republican chances in the midterms, especially as Trump’s priorities clash with public concerns.

Even among working-class Americans, a key group for Republicans, only 36% approve. Independents and younger voters show declining support, signaling his reach may be shrinking.

Trump continues to claim he is “delivering on promises” and dismisses media polls as inaccurate. But multiple surveys tell the same story: his support is fragile, approval is sinking, and his influence outside the Republican base is weakening.
