Trump’s Baseless Rant: Stigmatizing Food Stamp Users As ‘Largely Democrats’ As Cuts Loom

Baseless and false claim.

On Air Force One, President Donald Trump targeted food stamp recipients, asserting they are “largely Democrats,” just as the looming government shutdown threatened to halt their benefits.

Meanwhile, two federal judges moved to ensure the program continues. Judge Indira Talwani in Massachusetts and Judge John McConnell in Rhode Island ruled that the White House must keep funding SNAP, the program commonly called Food Stamps.

“Well, it always is, but all the Democrats have to do is say, let’s go. I mean, you know, they don’t have to do anything. They don’t, all they have to do is, say, the government is open. And we only need five Democrats.”

Trump argued the Democrats are to blame for the deadlock. “But they’re, you, know, they’ve become a radical left party. They really have, they’ve become a very radical left partner. And they’ve lost their minds. They’ve lost them minds. All they have to do, is say the government is open and that’s the end of it.”

Turning to SNAP, he added, “And you know largely, when you talk about SNAP, you’re talking about largely Democrats, but… I’m president. I want to help everybody. I want help Democrats and Republicans.”

He finished with a stark claim: “But when you’re talking about SNAP, if you look, it’s largely Democrats hurting their own people. Thank you very much, everybody.”

Data shows his statement does not hold up.

SNAP serves millions of Americans across party lines, and in fact, 25 of the 30 states Trump carried in 2024 rely on SNAP at rates higher than the national average. That means many of the people he singled out would be affected by the cuts.

Many said his remarks were a political attack on people who need help, while others argued he was pointing to the political dynamics of the shutdown. Still, focusing on party labels drew sharp criticism, especially as millions of Americans rely on SNAP benefits for food security.

The courts have temporarily kept the program running, but the dispute underscores the high stakes for Americans relying on federal nutrition programs.
