President Donald Trump, during a speech to Congressional Republicans on Tuesday, made some very strange noises that sounded even stranger out of context:

And even in context, they didn’t sound much better.

The noises came as part of an extended rant about transgender women in sports, as he was imitating the notion of someone trying to lift weights. He attempted to imply that a trans woman had won a weightlifting competition, possibly in the Olympics, over a cisgender woman. However, that hasn’t ever happened; the one trans competitor in Olympic weightlifting, Laurel Hubbard of Australia, competed in the 2020 Olympics, but did not win a medal.

Trump then spoke for more than a minute about someone who “transitioned” and won in Olympic boxing. This was likely a reference to Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won the gold medal in women’s welterweight boxing in 2024. But Khelif is not transgender and was not assigned male at birth. There was a contested claim that she had “failed a gender eligibility test” the previous year, but Trump is incorrect that she “transitioned.”

There were some pretty shocked reactions on social media.
