Back to conservative media work

Dan Bongino’s time at the top of the FBI appears to be coming to an abrupt end.

The deputy director is expected to resign within weeks, according to people familiar with the matter, bringing a short and uneasy chapter in Washington to a close.

The former conservative broadcaster is said to be preparing a return to Florida, and possibly back to the media spotlight he left behind.

Behind the scenes, the pressure has been mounting.

Sources say Bongino has already begun clearing out his office, quietly sending personal items south. Colleagues believe his departure is no longer a question of if, but when.

The job, it seems, came at a steep personal cost.

Earlier this year, Bongino admitted publicly that living apart from his wife had been deeply difficult. Speaking candidly on Fox News, he compared the separation to a kind of emotional limbo.

He said the days were long. The nights were lonely. And Washington felt isolated.

“I stare at four walls all day,” he said at the time. “It’s hard to be apart.”

That honesty caught notice and showed his future at the bureau was uncertain.

Bongino was appointed deputy FBI director in February by President Donald Trump, who praised him as loyal, passionate, and fearless. The appointment thrilled Trump supporters but unsettled critics.

Unlike past FBI leaders, Bongino arrived with a strong political identity and a massive media following.

To take the job, he walked away from his popular podcast, a move that stunned fans and cut off a major source of income.

Now, that sacrifice may be short-lived.

In recent interviews, Bongino has openly suggested that he plans to return to commentary one day. He stressed that his views have not changed, only his platform.

While Bongino has denied slacking on the job, insisting he and FBI Director Kash Patel work relentless hours, the signs of burnout have been hard to miss.

The strain was not just professional.

His family remained in Florida while he worked in Washington. Though the couple sold their Florida home earlier this year, it remains unclear where they plan to settle next.
