I don’t recall any time in recent history in which any president has been opposed by so many people in his party like Donald Trump has. The Lincoln Project and others have stepped forward to throw their support behind presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Republican Voters Against Trump is another such group that typically features former supporters of the president in their videos that now support Biden — but in this case, the group featured Miles Taylor, a former senior Trump administration official. He endorsed Joe Biden’s presidential campaign on Monday.
Taylor isn’t just any former official of the Trump administration; his resume includes serving as a political appointee at the Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2019 and as chief of staff to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Taylor offers the reasons for his endorsement, “even though,” he says, “I am not a Democrat.” Taylor describes Trump as being “unfocused” and “undisciplined.”
“What we saw week in and week out, for me, after two and a half years in that administration, was terrifying,” Taylor says in the video. “We would go in to try to talk to him about a pressing national security issue — cyberattack, terrorism threat — he wasn’t interested in those things. To him, they weren’t priorities.”

“Given what I have experienced in the administration, I have to support Joe Biden for president, and even though I am not a Democrat, even though I disagree on key issues, I’m confident that Joe Biden will protect the country and I’m confident that he won’t make the same mistakes as this President,” he continues.
“He told us to stop giving money to people whose houses had burned down from a wildfire because he was so rageful that people in the state of California didn’t support him and that politically it wasn’t a base for him,” Taylor says.

As Republican Voters Against Trump says in a tweet, “This is an unprecedented ad campaign with a sitting president’s former *political* staff who supported him in 2016.” Well, Trump is good at uniting people against him.
