The Jeffrey Epstein story is back in the news in a big way this week, with Congress returning from the government shutdown, a petition moving forward to compel the release of the Justice Department’s Epstein files, and Democrats on the House Oversight Committee releasing a cache of emails to and from Epstein, which were obtained from his estate.
MAGA figures have had shifting reactions to the news, from calling it old news to dismissing it as a nothingburger to pointing to a lack of a smoking gun that implicates Trump himself in any wrongdoing.
In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump decided to take a new tack, which included calling for a Justice Department “investigation” into Epstein’s relationship with certain Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, while also declaring that Epstein was “a Democrat.”

“Now that the Democrats are using the Epstein Hoax, involving Democrats, not Republicans, to try and deflect from their disastrous SHUTDOWN, and all of their other failures, I will be asking A.G. Pam Bondi, and the Department of Justice, together with our great patriots at the FBI, to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions, to determine what was going on with them, and him,” the post says.
“This is another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam, with all arrows pointing to the Democrats. Records show that these men, and many others, spent large portions of their life with Epstein, and on his “Island.” Stay tuned!!!”
In a different post, the president declared that “Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrat’s problem, not the Republican’s problem!”
In those posts, Trump makes several strange declarations. There are various embarrassing emails, in the new cache, involving Summers, although no evidence that he engaged in anything illegal or abusive. In a different email, Epstein states that Bill Clinton had never visited his island. Epstein, during his lifetime, donated to politicians of both parties. And Epstein’s relationship with JP Morgan Chase has been extensively litigated already, leading to a massive lawsuit settlement in 2023.
And there is plenty of damning stuff about Trump in the current emails, including Epstein declaring “I know how dirty donald is” and also stating that Trump “knew about the girls.”
