President Donald Trump’s visit to Malaysia turned into a loud protest against his support for Israel’s war in Gaza. He came to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN summit, but the streets had their own message for him.
Hundreds of Malaysians gathered across the capital, waving flags, holding signs, and chanting “Free, Free Palestine.”
“You go to hell!” one protester shouted, his voice echoing through the crowd as others joined in.

In Independence Square, protesters stood under the hot sun wearing keffiyehs and holding banners with pictures of Gaza’s destruction. “People who have a conscience know that Trump is a genocide enabler. Without him, Israel cannot kill all the children and people in Gaza,” said Asma Hanim Mahoud, who traveled 300 kilometers from Kelantan. “It’s not rocket science.”
Mahoud said she was upset that police moved the morning protest away from the main summit venue. Still, the crowd kept going. “We came all this way because we care,” one protester shouted as others cheered.
Police said they expected more than a thousand people, though the number was smaller. But even a few hundred loud voices can fill a city square. They were angry, united, and determined to be heard.
Choo Chon Kai, from the Socialist Party of Malaysia, said the rally was about more than Gaza. “This is a solidarity rally against US imperialism, as well as solidarity with the people of Palestine and people all over the world who are victims of US imperialism,” he said.
He also criticized the police for blocking the original protest site near the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. “We just want to make a point that we are against the US policies, but unfortunately, our police have been very hostile to the protest and even shut down the area where we were going to protest,” Choo said.
Later in the evening, protesters regrouped at Ampang Park and continued their chants. Some waved small Palestinian flags, others held signs that read “Trump, go home.” Cars passing by honked in rhythm with the chants, and the sound echoed through downtown Kuala Lumpur.
Mursihidah, a local woman attending with her husband, said she has been joining pro-Palestine rallies since 2023. “I honestly don’t know why we’re still doing this,” she said. “This shouldn’t be happening, but somebody has to be their voice. We have to be their voice because they don’t have a voice.”
