Standing in the Cross Hall of the White House at 9 p.m., Trump delivered his first major speech since launching strikes on Iran. The delivery stood out immediately. Words blurred. Sentences broke. The pacing felt off.

This was the wartime address America got.

Hours before the speech, Trump previewed it at an Easter lunch. “Tonight, I’m making a little speech at nine o’clock, and basically I’m gonna tell everybody how great I am, what a great job I’ve done, what a phenomenal job, what a phenomenal job I’ve done,” he told attendees. The White House uploaded the video. Then quietly took it down.

The speech followed that tone.

Clips from the speech spread within minutes. “Trump really cannot pull off the primetime speech that he has to read. He sounds addled,” one journalist posted.

The internet clocked in immediately.

The content was not better than the delivery.

Trump claimed Iran’s crackdown on its own citizens had killed 45,000 people, a figure significantly higher than previous mainstream estimates, which he offered without a source.

He claimed that the U.S. was “on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly” and that “these core strategic objectives are nearing completion.” He added that the military would “finish the job” and continue to “hit [Iran] very hard” over the next two to three weeks, saying, “We are going to hit them extremely hard… We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong.”
