Tension filled the chamber from the very start of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
Standing before Congress, Trump declared that America had entered a “golden age” and said his first year in office brought “a transformation like no one has ever seen before.” He tied his message to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary and told lawmakers the country would “never go back” to where it was before he returned to power.
But celebration quickly gave way to confrontation.
Trump repeatedly turned his focus toward Democrats seated in front of him. On immigration, the mood grew especially heated. After highlighting crimes committed by people in the country illegally, he asked lawmakers to stand if they agreed with the statement: “The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” Democrats remained seated.

Trump leveled the accusation plainly: “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
At one point, he lashed out, saying, “These people are crazy. I’m telling you, they’re crazy.” He accused Democrats of “destroying our country” and claimed his leadership had stopped them “just in the nick of time.”
Republicans applauded loudly. Democrats stayed still.

Trump then shifted to the economy. He defended the tariffs he imposed over the last year, even after the Supreme Court ruled that several of them were unconstitutional. He promised replacement tariffs and repeated his claim that tariff revenue could replace income taxes.
“As time goes by, I believe the tariffs paid for by foreign countries will, like in the past, substantially replace the modern day system of income tax,” he said.
Economists have questioned that idea, and recent polls show many Americans are worried about rising prices. Still, Trump insisted his approach would ease the financial burden on families.
He also promoted the tax cuts passed under what Republicans called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” “All Democrats, every single one of them voted against these really important and very necessary massive tax cuts,” Trump said.
In the midst of policy and attacks, Trump acknowledged the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, celebrating their gold medal win and prompting a lengthy standing ovation from members of Congress.
As the speech stretched past one hour and 45 minutes, it became the longest State of the Union in modern history.
Late in the address, Trump turned to foreign policy. He spoke about last year’s U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities and warned that Iran is still “pursuing their sinister ambitions.” While he said, “My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” he added, “I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror… to have a nuclear weapon.”
