President Donald Trump has announced another place name change, joining “Gulf of America,” “Lake America,” and the “Trump Kennedy Center.”
According to the Daily Mail, the president has hinted at renaming a U.S. state, indicating on social media that he wants to rename “New Mexico” to “New America.”
“On Sunday, Trump posted a map of the Southwest state to Truth Social, but ‘Mexico’ within the state’s name had been crossed out in red and replaced with ‘America,” The Daily Mail said. “The post came with no remarks attached but followed a tense back-and-forth with Canada that saw the renaming of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ last month.”

It is unclear whether Trump is serious about changing the name, although the president of the United States almost certainly does not have the power to change a U.S. state’s name.

The Hill reported that the social media post had a surprising origin: It began as a hoax that Trump soon made real.
Trump, on Sunday, “posted a map of New Mexico labeled ‘New America’ following the spread of a since-debunked online hoax claiming he had signed an executive order renaming the state,” The Hill said.
Trump did not win New Mexico in any of his campaigns for president, and Trump has accused them of “cheating.”
“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!.” Trump said on Truth Social.
Social media users mocked Trump’s idea of giving that state a new name. Including the woman running for governor of that state:
You can’t be serious.
New Mexico is not for renaming. Not up for sale.
My promise: I’ll always stand up for what makes New Mexico, New Mexico. https://t.co/bttKOAsvqj
