Back in 2025, President Donald Trump called Bari Weiss, the new CBS News boss, a “great new leader.” At the time, they seemed on the same page.
But things have changed. Weiss recently questioned the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, and now CBS is grouped with the “fake news” outlets Trump often attacks.
She shared a CBS report on X showing that only 14% of those arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Trump’s first year back had violent criminal records. She asked, “Is Trump really deporting the worst of the worst?”

Her post immediately caught the attention of DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.
“Drug trafficking, Distribution of child [sexual abuse material], burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, human smuggling are all categorized as ‘non violent crimes,’” McLaughlin fired back. “Like we said, ~70% of those illegal aliens arrested under Trump and [Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi] Noem have pending criminal charges or prior convictions.”

The White House’s rapid response X account jumped in, calling out CBS correspondent Ed O’Keefe for sharing Weiss’ post. “The Fake News seems to think that illegal alien drug traffickers, drunk drivers, burglars, and those with weapons charges—whom they classify as ‘nonviolent’ offenders—should be left alone, allowed to roam freely within the United States,” it wrote. “Not under this administration.”

But internal data tells a different story. Less than 14% of the nearly 400,000 immigrants arrested by ICE in the past year had charges or convictions for violent crimes. By January 2026, about 74% of people in ICE detention had no criminal convictions at all. Analysts say the administration is increasingly targeting minor offenses or people who missed check-ins.
Weiss has challenged Trump before. She broke with the administration over the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis, a case that has drawn widespread attention and outrage.
In a Free Press article titled “Kristi Noem’s Reckless Lies,” Weiss openly criticized the administration. She wrote:
“How else to explain the messaging this weekend from his administration that asks loyal Republicans to disbelieve their lying eyes?”
