Vance’s Advisers Scramble To Save Him from the Same Debate Disaster That Trapped Trump

Some clues, from debate prep, about what to expect from J.D. Vance in Tuesday's vice presidential debate.

This year’s vice presidential debate, possibly this cycle’s last one, is set for Tuesday night. Much attention has been paid to how J.D. Vance prepares for the debate. Earlier reports have stated that Monica Crowley, a former Trump Administration official who later had a position with Project 2025, and Trump attorney Alina Habba are assisting Vance with his prep.

A new piece in The Daily Beast examined Vance’s debate preparation and what to expect on Tuesday night- and that we might not see him getting  bogged down in easily disproved lies and conspiracy theories the way Trump did in his debate against Kamala Harris.

Trump senior campaign adviser Jason Miller was asked in an interview this week whether Vance plans to make the false claims he’s been making — and Donald Trump repeated in the presidential debate – about Haitian immigrants eating dogs and cats.

“I definitely would expect Senator Vance to talk about all aspects of illegal immigration, including as we’ve seen—and this is a big issue with regard to Springfield—the Kamala Harris smokescreen when it comes to illegal aliens and the issue of temporary protective status,” Miller said in the interview. Miller also stated that Walz is “very good at debates,” contrary to a recent series of stories about the Minnesota governor being nervous about the debate.

It would seem likely that, even if Vance does not lean into the dogs-and-cats lies, Walz will bring the topic up in order to criticize him.

Later, Miller wasn’t so complimentary of Walz, describing him as a “wildly gesticulating effeminate caricature.”

This is an indication that the Trump-Vance ticket hasn’t landed on an effective line of attack on Walz, so they’ve just defaulted to calling him gay.

Another report, by The Hill, stated that the two vice presidential candidates are looking to “do no harm” in their faceoff on Tuesday night.

“The only rule in the debate that matters is: protect the top of the ticket. The VP debate doesn’t move anything unless you don’t protect the top of the ticket,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), who was Hillary Clinton’s running mate in the 2016 cycle, told the newspaper.

In addition, Donald Trump has announced plans to do “live play-by-play” of the debate, on Truth Social.
