Vice President JD Vance appeared this week at a Turning Point USA event and made news for two things: his seemingly overly familiar behavior with Erika Kirk, the widow of his friend and Turning Point founder Charlie, and for a comment that he wishes his wife, Usha, who was raised Hindu, would convert to Christianity.
Vance, in response to a question at the event, had said that Usha grew up in a “not a particularly religious” family – although he has implied otherwise in the past — he added that “I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually, my wife comes to see it the same way.”
“If she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will, so that doesn’t cause a problem for me. That’s something you work out.”
Vance: Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved in by church. Yeah, I honestly, I do wish that because I believe in the Christian gospel. And I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way. If she does not, then god says everybody has free will and so that does not… pic.twitter.com/IVVJfMFhKT

Vance has not addressed that moment with Erika Kirk, but he did angrily defend his comments about his wife’s potential conversion.

The vice president, on Friday, quoted Ezra Levant, himself a long-controversial Canadian right-wing media figure, who had said of Vance that “it’s weird to throw your wife’s religion under the bus, in public, for a moment’s acceptance by groypers.” Vance called it a “disgusting comment.”
What a disgusting comment, and it’s hardly been the only one along these lines.
First off, the question was from a person seemingly to my left, about my interfaith marriage. I’m a public figure, and people are curious, and I wasn’t going to avoid the question.

There were some shocked reactions to what the vice president said, including some who noticed that a certain segment of the Republican base these days does not approve of interracial marriage or Indian people.
Vance is MUCH angrier at the person who made this banal, correct observation than he is at, for instance, the GOP state senator who said Indian women look like they don’t bathe, or the DOGE staffer who posted “normalize Indian hate.” Besting Cruz as the GOP’s shittiest husband. https://t.co/JFv7kAOR4V pic.twitter.com/B6txaQPsRi

People have been calling his wife and kids slurs for like 24 hours straight and the only comment he has is to cry christian persecution. At least Trump embraces being a shitty person, this guy is a fucking gormless weasel. https://t.co/8wjai0Y7wb
