Recently, Donald Trump told reporters, “We’re way ahead of China militarily… I rebuilt the military four years ago.”
He made the remark during a live appearance at the White House alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The line came out strong, but the timeline didn’t match. Four years ago, it was Joe Biden in charge, not Trump.
The meeting focused on a new agreement between the United States and Australia involving critical minerals and rare earths to strengthen economic ties and defense cooperation.
“We are way ahead of China militarily,” he said. “When it comes to weaponry, when it comes to AI… the big thing is AI. We are building more plants in this country than anyone ever imagined.”

Then he added, “We have weapons that a lot of people don’t even know about, and I got them started four years ago. I rebuilt the military four years ago.”

The statement spread instantly, leaving many wondering whether the President had misspoken or forgotten who was actually in office at the time.

He went on, talking about China’s trade payments. “They are paying tremendous amounts of money to us in the form of tariffs,” he said. “They are not taking advantage anymore.” Albanese stood beside him, smiling tightly as Trump bounced from trade to defense to offhand remarks.
When asked about Australia’s Ambassador, Kevin Rudd, Trump said, “I don’t know anything about him. You said ‘bad’? Then maybe he’ll like to apologies. Did the Ambassador say something bad about me? Don’t tell me? Where is he? Is he still working for you?” Rudd began, “Before I took this position, Mr. President—” but Trump jumped in, “I don’t like you either and I probably never will.”
