They look rather excited; Arizona is going to be competitive.

It’s always fascinating to watch the shifting sands of politics, but even by the wild standards of 2024, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is leaving a lot of us scratching our heads. Here we have a man who’s suspended his presidential campaign, endorsed Donald Trump, and yet, is reportedly cozying up to Kamala Harris behind the scenes for a cabinet position. It’s the political equivalent of walking into a room wearing stripes and polka dots, claiming both are in style. What is RFK Jr.’s endgame here?

Let’s start with the Trump rally. The energy in that Glendale, Arizona crowd was palpable. Trump stepped onto the stage with his usual bravado, building up the suspense, introducing RFK Jr. to a crowd that seemed more than eager to embrace him. There was applause, cheering, and an energy that made it seem as if RFK Jr. had been one of Trump’s closest allies all along. It was a sight many of us never expected to see—RFK Jr., the man who carried the weight of the Kennedy name, standing beside Trump with a smile.

RFK Jr. has always played outside the lines of traditional politics. He’s been vocal on issues that, frankly, alienated both sides of the aisle at various points in his career. But aligning with Trump? That felt like a new level of unpredictability.

But here’s where it gets even more puzzling: WaPo reported that “Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tried to meet with Kamala Harris to discuss Cabinet job”
HERE:

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sought a meeting last week with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris to discuss the possibility of serving in her administration, perhaps as a Cabinet secretary, if he throws his support behind her campaign and she wins, according to Kennedy campaign officials …

Harris has rebuffed the offer of an endorsement, while Kennedy also has had conversations with Republican nominee Donald Trump about a role in his administration.

Yes, you read that right. On the one hand, RFK Jr. is publicly throwing his weight behind Trump, while on the other, he’s quietly positioning himself for a role in a potential Harris administration. Is this just hedging his bets, or does he have a grander vision that’s simply too complex for the rest of us to grasp?

CBS News reports on what the Harris campaign response was to the RFK Jr. campaign suspension:

This raises some tough questions about RFK Jr.’s motivations. What’s the message here? Is this about personal ambition, about being in the room where it happens, regardless of who’s running the show? Or is it something more? Maybe RFK Jr. genuinely believes that, regardless of whether Trump or Harris wins, he can make a difference. Maybe he sees himself as the bridge between two completely opposing forces in American politics. But the optics? They’re confusing at best.

Endorsing Trump—who stands on the opposite end of the political spectrum from the legacy of RFK Jr.’s family—is one thing. But simultaneously angling for a cabinet position with Harris? That’s where it becomes a head-scratcher. And what’s more, what does Harris make of this? Would her administration even consider bringing on someone who just stood on stage with Trump, receiving applause from a crowd chanting MAGA slogans?

RFK Jr.’s play here seems to be rooted in pragmatism, but it’s a high-stakes game. By throwing his lot in with Trump, he risks alienating the traditional Democratic base that once held the Kennedy family in such high esteem. On the other hand, cozying up to Harris might make him look like he’s not fully committed to the populist message Trump is pushing. This balancing act could leave him with nothing—no political home and no real influence.

At the end of the day, RFK Jr.’s recent moves might be the boldest example of political opportunism we’ve seen this election cycle. Whether this strategy pays off remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: his name will be one we continue to hear as both campaigns make their final pushes. He’s playing a dangerous game, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can walk this tightrope without falling off. As for the rest of us, we’ll be watching with a mix of fascination and bewilderment, wondering just what RFK Jr. will do next.
