President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the tarmac in Alaska on Friday. The meeting came before a high-stakes summit that could decide if a ceasefire happens in the deadliest war in Europe since World War Two.
Trump stepped off Air Force One and waited for Putin. The two leaders greeted each other and smiled. US F-22 fighter jets stood on either side of the red carpet as a show of force.

The summit is causing concern. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was not invited. European leaders fear Trump might make deals that help Russia and hurt Ukraine. They worry he could freeze the conflict and even recognize Russian control over part of Ukraine. Trump tried to calm fears as he boarded his plane. “I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine, I’m here to get them at a table,” he said.
When asked what would make the meeting a success, Trump said, “I want to see a ceasefire rapidly … I’m not going to be happy if it’s not today … I want the killing to stop.”
Trump will meet Putin with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy to Russia, Steve Witkoff, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. A larger meeting later will include Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Putin will be joined by foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN.
