Watch: Usha Vance’s Refusal To Answer Whether She Owns A MAGA Hat— Yikes!

Hat lady. Allegedly.

During a recent sit-down with anchor Kate Snow, the second lady spoke about her husband’s political future. “I really care greatly about JD’s success,” she said. Then Snow asked, “Do you own a MAGA hat?”

The pause was audible.

“Um,” Vance began. “I don’t really own any hats. I think I have a Disneyland hat, I want to say.” A nervous laugh followed. “Not a hat lady.”

The DNC’s rapid response account had photos up within minutes. A wide-brimmed sun hat in India. A white baseball cap at a separate event. Side by side. Posted with the caption: “Usha Vance owns multiple hats.”

The implication being that the second lady of the United States had been caught in a lie about headwear.

This is where we are.

The hat question was not random. It came after Snow had already pointed out that Usha was a registered Democrat until at least 2014, the year she married JD Vance. She asked whether Usha felt fully comfortable in her current political universe. Usha gulped, tilted her head, and asked Snow to clarify. Snow said: “The political universe that you’re in.” Usha said she felt very comfortable and moved on.

What the interview also revealed, beyond the hat drama, was a second lady who is clearly navigating an unusual position.

She is a Yale Law graduate, a former civil litigator, a practicing Hindu married to a Catholic convert, a former Democrat now living in the Vice President’s residence, and currently pregnant with their fourth child due in July. She told Snow she and JD disagree sometimes.

“I’m not his staffer,” she said. “There’s no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything.” She also casually mentioned they have a Costco membership, which genuinely surprised Snow more than anything else in the interview.

On whether JD plans to run in 2028, Usha was careful. “Come back in 2027 and ask me,” she said. Sensible answer given that the current administration is four weeks into a war with Iran and the midterms are 8 months away.

The hat question is easy to mock as a gotcha. But it was asking something real. Usha Vance has always occupied a slightly different lane from her husband. She has been less visible, more measured, and consistently avoided being pinned to any specific political identity.
