Speaking at Camp David on Friday, Trump made a claim about his own suffering that ran headfirst into several centuries of American history.

The setup was a fight over Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general, which Senator John Cornyn has been blocking over the $1.8 billion “weaponization fund” meant to compensate Trump supporters and January 6 defendants who claim they were unfairly targeted by federal investigators. Trump used the meeting to distance himself from the fund while making a considerably bigger claim in the process.

“I wasn’t covered by that fund, I don’t want to be covered by the fund,” he said. “I probably was abused more than anybody in the history of our country.”

The internet had a rebuttal ready almost immediately.

Widely followed account Spiro’s Ghost took a broader view of the claim. “Just stop for a minute and think about the breathtaking mental illness and off the charts malignant narcissism on display here,” they wrote. “We are a country that ENSLAVED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. We are a country with FOUR assassinated Presidents. And many millions more have suffered more than this grifter lowlife maniac.”

Others skipped the history lesson and went straight for the math.

“Dude you committed crimes nobody came for you for no reason,” X user Sky wrote.

Historian Kevin Kruse zoomed out to explain why the framing matters beyond a single soundbite. “This is not just about rewriting the past; it’s also an effort to make any future effort to hold this administration responsible for its brazen criminality seem like more ‘weaponization of the justice system,'” he wrote.

Retired educator Eileen Pardini raised a specific counterpoint of her own. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he organize and pay for the insurrectionists to come, and then watch it unfold on television?”

The comment also landed at an inconvenient moment for Trump’s own nominee.

Punchbowl News’ Laura Weiss connected the remarks directly to the stalled confirmation fight. “These sorts of comments from President Trump are exactly why Cornyn and Tillis are so dug in on getting legally binding language the anti-weaponization fund is dead,” she wrote. “A handful of other R senators want this assurance before confirming Blanche too.”
