Somewhere between the jokes and the insults Friday night, Trump slipped in an announcement that isn’t legally possible.
“That is why tonight, to show how much I care about the press and I want to save your ratings, I am pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president. I won 3 times,” he told the crowd at the Waldorf Astoria.
The 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two elected terms, meaning the math was off twice over: Trump has won the presidency twice, in 2016 and 2024, not three times, and a fourth term isn’t legally on the table regardless. He’d teed it up a few minutes earlier with a different version of the same joke. “Just like my presidency, the second time is always better. And the third time will be better yet,” he said, before adding, “I’m only kidding.”

X had its own read on how seriously to take that line.
I’m sure the MAGAs would be all for it. I’m surprised he’s not going for a change in the constitution. He has enough idolizers to help push it through

So if his third term was 2021-2025, this means all the stuff he blames Biden for was actually his fault, then ?

Not even aware how many times he has been elected already.

So, if Trump ignores the 22 Amendment and runs for potus, then Obama can run again too.
Speaking as an Independent, that would be an awesome, historic political battle and race for the ballot box.🗳️— Dawn Young-McDaniel🎗️🐾 (@justdawn_) July 25, 2026
The rest of his opening remarks leaned into the same theme of making the press feel replaceable.
“You people have no idea how lucky you are. When I’m gone, you’re all going to be broke. Your business model is going to be finished. There’s not going to be anybody to report on,” he told the room.
He also repeated a claim he’s made before, that 93% of his media coverage runs negative, without offering a source for the figure.
Friday marked Trump’s first appearance at the dinner as a sitting president and his first time attending at all since 2011. That year, he showed up as a reality television host in the audience while then-President Obama used his own remarks to needle him directly over his birther claims about Obama’s birth certificate. “I know that he’s taken some flack lately,” Obama said. “But no one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald.”
I came across this video in my feed of Barack Obama roasting Donald Trump in 2011 at the White House Correspondents Dinner about his birth certificate.
Donald Trump was there and in the audience.

Trump skipped the dinner throughout his entire first term and again in 2025 before finally accepting this year’s invitation, announcing it on Truth Social with a description of himself as “truly one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of our Country, the G.O.A.T., according to many.”
