At a campaign stop in Milford, Michigan on Monday, Trump made one of his more unusual claims, telling autoworkers he’d outdone their own parents.
“Those people love Trump because I’ve done more for you than your parents. OK, your parents are good. I’m not going to knock your parents, but I have been better to you than your parents. That I can tell you,” he said at GM’s Proving Ground, adding: “And they would agree with me. Wherever they may be.”

Trump had traveled to Michigan to support Senate hopeful Mike Rogers, though it took him 46 minutes to actually say Rogers’ name.

Before he got there, he spent a stretch attacking UAW President Shawn Fain, blaming him for the union’s past support of Democrats and claiming, incorrectly, that Fain no longer holds his post. “I never spoke to him. Never saw him,” Trump said, adding: “I don’t know what happened to the guy. Somebody said he got fired.” Fain has led the UAW since 2023 and remains in the role.
Trump also revived his running bit about mispronouncing Mexico, recounting a story about warning donors he’d cut off business with “MEH-hee-ho,” repeating it several more times after insisting someone had once corrected his pronunciation, apparently wrongly.
His tariff pitch didn’t quite line up with the underlying numbers, either.
Trump pointed to GM’s truck and SUV output, claiming it’s up 20% in 2026, and told reporters touring the facility: “It’s amazing what tariffs are doing for GM.” Bureau of Labor Statistics figures paint a different picture for the workforce itself: national auto and auto parts employment has dropped roughly 4% since Trump returned to office, while Michigan’s overall manufacturing jobs have fallen 2.5% in that same window, amounting to nearly 4,000 lost positions in the state where he was speaking.
He also asked the crowd to vote on his preferred insult for Biden.
“Sleepy Joe Biden or Crooked Joe Biden? Let’s go,” he said, letting them cheer for each choice. Democrats broadly got branded “communists” who “don’t want police and don’t want prisons,” and Trump waved off concerns about the cost of living as a fabrication pushed by “fake news,” a claim that clashes with his own tariffs and an ongoing war with Iran, both of which have pushed prices higher.
Rogers finally got his turn near the close, thanking Trump and pledging support for the election restriction bill Trump has spent months demanding despite it lacking enough Senate votes to pass. The full remarks stretched to roughly 65 minutes, arriving just days after Trump’s rambling, insult-heavy turn at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
