World Leaders Watch As Trump Keeps Confusing Greenland With Iceland During Speech At Davos

He’s lost it

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Donald Trump repeatedly mixed up Iceland and Greenland during a key portion of his speech.

In a 90-second stretch, Trump mentioned Iceland 4 times when he clearly seemed to be talking about Greenland, the country he has been angling to acquire. “I’m helping Europe, I am helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me,” Trump said of NATO allies.

Moments later, he repeated the mistake while criticizing NATO. “I don’t know that they’d be here for us,” he said. “They’re not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. I mean, our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.”

This marks the second day in a row Trump has made the same error. During a Tuesday news conference at the White House, he said, “Iceland, without tariffs, they wouldn’t even be talking to us about it. So we’ll see what happens.”

Despite the gaffes, Trump did make news on Greenland itself. After dodging the question for much of his speech, he eventually stated that he will not use force to acquire the island.

Social media quickly erupted over the blunder.
