The funeral of former President Jimmy Carter last week was one of those rare instances in which all living presidents were together in the same room. It gave longtime political observers a chance to marvel at all of the former presidents, vice presidents, and first ladies sitting within the National Cathedral’s first two rows and their complex histories with one another.
One particular moment saw former presidents and longtime enemies, Barack Obama and Donald Trump not only sitting next to each other, but appearing to enjoy an animated conversation prior to the start of the funeral. Trump, later that day, even said at a press conference “I didn’t realize how friendly it looked,” and “Boy, they look like two people that like each other. And we probably do.”
To some, it was a heartwarming moment of longtime rivals getting along on a solemn occasion, while for others, it was an indication that Obama wasn’t all that serious about Trump being a threat to democracy.
Alas, it doesn’t appear that the moment of reconciliation is one that lasted.

Over the weekend, on Truth Social, Trump shared a comical video featuring impressionists doing Trump and Obama’s voices during the pre-funeral discussion. In the video, Obama tells Trump that he knew he’d win, and that, of Joe Biden, “do you know what happened? He just didn’t wanna leave.” “Obama” also says of Kamala Harris — who was sitting in the row in front of them — “I did what I could to help her- she was horrendous.”
Also in the video, “Trump” says of Hillary Clinton, “You know what I realized? Hillary still hates me; I know she’ll never forgive me,” before he and “Obama” discuss the possibility of playing golf together.
The parody video doesn’t match what a New York Post lip-reading analyst’s interpretation of the conversation, which had Obama trying to discuss an urgent matter with Trump at a later time.
“I can’t talk, we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today,” Trump “said” during the pre-funeral discussion, per the lip-reader’s interpretration.
At any rate, if anyone was under the impression that Donald Trump and Barack Obama will from this day forward be friends, it appears that’s not the case.
