Since Donald Trump was elected to another term in November, there has been a great deal of commentary about how “The Resistance” that emerged after Trump’s first election win hasn’t really materialized this time. The street protests have been smaller, while celebrity voices — a vast, possibly too-big part of the Kamala Harris campaign — have been much more muted.

That is until Selena Gomez spoke out on Monday.

According to The Daily Beast, the singer/actress posted a since-delated video on Instagram, in which she is seen crying while talking about the deportations that took place in the early days of the second Trump presidency.

“All my people are getting attacked,” Gomez said in the now-deleted video. “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

This has resulted in some not-so-happy reactions from the MAGA faithful.

Libsof Tiktok is a screen-captured video version, leading to lots of dunking from the right.

“Posting yourself weeping over illegal immigrant criminals being deported is a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism,” Piers Morgan, his ever-shifting pendulum now back to the pro-Trump side, said on X.

Others made an English Premier League soccer joke out of it:

Matt Walsh declared, “Move back to Mexico in solidarity with them. That’s something you could do,” of Gomez, who was born in Texas and is an American citizen. Others have pointed out that Gomez has been open about her parents having crossed the border illegally in the 1970s and later attaining citizenship.

Gomez has been in the news for another, unrelated reason: She co-stars in the movie Emilia Perez, in which her Spanish speaking and dialogue have been heavily criticized. The film tied the record for the most Oscar nominations in history, but Gomez herself was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
