After a couple of months out of the public eye, former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared over the weekend at the NAACP Image Awards, where she received the Chairman’s Award on Saturday.
In her speech, as reported by ABC News, Harris did not speak very specifically about her election toss, although she did take shots at both President Trump and Elon Musk.
“While we have no illusions about what we are up against in this chapter in our American story, this chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office nor by the wealthiest among us,”
This evening, I was honored to accept the NAACP’s Chairman’s Award.
I grew up inspired by the work of the NAACP — by all those who took up the fight for justice, equality, and opportunity. Their example is part of the reason I chose a life of public service.

“The American story will be written by you. Written by us. By we the people,” Harris added. “We have done it before and we will do it again,” she said of defeating Trump.
Harris did reference various recent disasters.

“Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy and ask ‘What do we do now?’” Harris said in the speech. “But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before. And we will do it again. We use our power. We organize, mobilize. We educate. We advocate. Our power has never come from having an easy path.”
The Chairman’s Award was presented to Barack Obama all the way back in 2005, shortly before his election to the U.S. Senate. Recent winners include John Lewis in 2020, Samuel L. Jackson in 2022, Rep. Bennie Thompson in 2023, and poet Amanda Gorman in 2024.
The Wayans family — Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, and Damon Wayans Jr. — was also honored at the ceremony, which took place in Pasadena, Calif.
A poll last week found that Harris, who has hinted at wanting to run for governor of California, is seen as a frontrunner in the 2026 race, with 57 percent of Democratic voters favoring her candidacy.
