Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88. He passed away on Easter Monday at his home in the Vatican. His death came just one day after meeting with United States Vice President JD Vance.

JD Vance, who is Catholic, was the last world leader to meet the Pope before he died. Their meeting took place on Easter Sunday. Reports say it was a short visit. They shared Easter greetings and exchanged gifts. The Pope gave Mr. Vance a red rosary, a white rosary for his wife, and chocolates for his children.

After the news of the Pope’s death, Mr. Vance posted a message media. He said he had “just learned” about the Pope’s passing and that he was heartbroken. He also remembered a special message, or homily, that the Pope gave during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said it was “beautiful” and that he would never forget it. He ended by saying, “May God rest his soul.”

Here is what he posted on X (formerly Twitter):

Mr. Vance’s tweet received many reactions online. Some people praised him for sharing kind words and honoring the Pope. But others did not like the way he worded his message. They said it felt strange or cold, especially since he saw the Pope just one day before. Some people also thought he was trying to make the moment about himself.

There was more criticism because of Vance’s past disagreements with Pope Francis. Over the years, Pope Francis has frequently spoken out against policies supported by Donald Trump. He strongly disagreed with Trump’s immigration plans and called them a “disgrace.” He also spoke out against Trump’s cuts to aid and social programs.

Vice President Vance has defended many of Trump’s policies. He even used old Catholic teachings to support them. Ealier, Pope Francis wrote a rare open letter to U.S. bishops, warning that Trump’s actions were causing a “major crisis” in America. So, many people remembered this history when they saw Vance’s tweet.

Still, the Pope’s death has touched millions around the world. Pope Francis was the spiritual leader for over 1.4 billion Catholics. He was renowned for his humility, kindness, and deep care. Even people who didn’t always agree with him respected his honesty and courage.

World leaders also shared their sadness. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “deeply pained” and remembered meeting the Pope at a G7 summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin also offered his condolences. Many celebrities and business leaders shared emotional messages.

President Donald Trump posted a short note on Truth Social. He wrote, “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him.” While the message was respectful, people remembered that the Pope had often criticized Trump in the past.

Now that Pope Francis has passed, the Vatican is following special rules. First, the camerlengo, a top church official, must confirm the death. He does this by calling the Pope’s baptismal name three times. If there is no reply, he announces that the Pope is dead.

Next, the Pope’s private rooms are locked. His special ring, called the Fisherman’s Ring, is broken to show that his time as Pope has ended.

The funeral must happen within six days. Most Popes are buried at St. Peter’s Basilica. However, some reports suggest that Pope Francis may have requested to be buried elsewhere. After the funeral, there will be a period of nine days of mourning.

Then, the Church will begin the process to choose a new Pope. Cardinals from around the world will come together to vote. Until then, the Vatican will remain in a period known as the “interregnum,” which refers to the time between two Popes.
