Actor Robert De Niro has long been one of Hollywood’s sharpest critics of President Donald Trump, as De Niro has often ripped Trump from the stages of awards shows, in interviews, movie premiere Q&As, press conferences outside of Trump’s hush money trial, and other settings.
One example of him doing so was a year ago, when he appeared on MSNBC to declare that democracy was at risk in the 2024 election.
“I don’t think they understand how dangerous it will be if he ever, God forbid, becomes president [again]. I don’t think they really understand. And, historically, from what I see, in Nazi Germany they had it with Hitler. They don’t take him seriously. Looks like a clown. Acts like a clown. Mussolini, same thing. These guys, I don’t know why, they look like clowns. Somehow people, that element of society, identifies with them,” De Niro told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle in the May 2024 interview.

“It would be chaos beyond our imagination. There’s no mystery about him. He’s right out front, and what he says is what it’ll be if he becomes president,” De Niro predicted of a second Trump Administration.
“It’s about right and wrong. Period. The guy’s a monster. It’s beyond wrong. It’s almost like he wants to do the most horrible things that he can think of in order to get…a rise out of us? I don’t know what it is, but it’s f*cking scary.”
Trump struck back last year, after the hush money trial appearance, denouncing the Oscar-winning actor in a Truth Social post as “so pathetic and sad out there.”
“Donald Trump has created this. He should be telling them not to do this. … He wants to sow total chaos, which he’s succeeding in some areas and places to do,” De Niro had said outside of the trial. “If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss away these freedoms that we take for granted, and elections, forget about it. … He will never leave.”
