A British Paper’s Brutal Caption About Trump Just Went Viral

Spain beat Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final, and for about a minute afterward, Trump appeared to have other plans for whose moment this was going to be.

Shutterstock photographer Javier García caught the aftermath: Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino standing off to the side in gold confetti, chatting, while the actual champions celebrated on their own a few feet away. When the Guardian ran the photo in its World Cup live blog, the caption did more work than the image itself. “Gianni Infantino carefully explains to Donald Trump that he is not part of the Spanish national team,” it read.

The caption worked because of what it was quietly describing.

After the trophy and medal presentation, Trump stayed glued to the team rather than stepping back to let them have their photo, prompting an Australian broadcaster caught on a hot mic to say, “They’re going to edit him out of that,” which is exactly what happened.

The Spanish men’s national team posted its own official celebration photo on X afterward with Trump cropped out entirely. Getting him out of frame in real time took some doing, too. Players tried ushering him away politely first, and when that didn’t fully work, Infantino more or less pulled him out himself, which is the exact instant García’s photo captured.

One Spain player wasn’t content to let the exit happen quietly.

Víctor Muñoz turned toward Trump mid-celebration and broke into his own dance directly in front of him, a moment that circulated almost as widely as the caption itself.

X did not let the Guardian’s line pass without weighing in.

Some of the response veered from amused to genuinely angry.

One widely shared post read: “The whole world was laughing at our shameless, Moron in Chief. Not a damn day goes by that he doesn’t embarrass our Country.”

Others connected it to Trump’s broader treatment of Spain in recent weeks, with one Reddit comment noting the whiplash: “Last week he didn’t want to trade with Spain, this week he wants a photo session with them,” referencing remarks Trump made criticizing the country at the NATO summit earlier this month.
