A frequent critique of Donald Trump’s Iran adventure is that while he spent every one of his presidential campaigns promising that he would avoid open-ended wars in the Middle East, and that his opponents would send Americans to die in such conflicts, here he is just such a war.
Perhaps sensitive to that critique, Trump made a post to Truth Social on Tuesday, in which he compared the casualty figures and lengths of previous foreign wars to his own interventions this year in Venezuela and Iran:
It’s one thing for Trump, who likes to brag about ending foreign wars while using a very liberal definition of the word “war” to not refer to the current intervention as a war.

But for the president of the United States, just days after Americans were killed serving in that conflict, to brag that so few Americans had been killed is shockingly callous, even by Trump’s impossibly low standards.
Trump said this week that the two service members killed this week had died “in service of our country” and in “never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
A lot of people on social media were outraged that Trump could be so cruel:
He’s a psycho. Unwell. Unstable. Unhinged. He’s not a commander in chief. He’s a traitor. He fomented an insurrection on #January6th and had Capitol Police officers beaten and bludgeoned. Then pardoned the offenders. https://t.co/j2YVUjWtzR

“He has consistently disparaged and demeaned members of our military, fallen soldiers, and the work that we must do to uphold the strength and the respect of the United States of America around the world.” ~ @KamalaHarris, September 10, 2024 https://t.co/axwyflRokg pic.twitter.com/rj5mMyZOdE

Venezuela was a war? Interesting. Only now is it a war since it makes him believe he started and finished a war in one day https://t.co/OUAi5xMXNS
