Donald Trump’s mania for renovations in Washington has claimed another victim. This time, it’s the German-American Friendship Garden fountain.
According to Newsweek, contractors have “severely damaged” a fountain in the German-American Friendship Garden on the National Mall, between the White House and the Washington Monument.
The report stated that “the damage occurred after a contractor vehicle drove over the center of the fountain after protective barriers surrounding the feature had been moved. The incident cracked the fountain in several places, and repairs are now underway.”

What is the German-American Friendship Garden?
“Established in 1988 to commemorate 300 years of German immigration to America, the garden sits on the Washington Monument grounds between the White House and the monument itself, along one of Washington’s most heavily visited pedestrian corridors. The space includes landscaping inspired by both Germany and the United States, together with seating areas and fountain features,” Newsweek said.
The Friendship Garden, the report added, was restored in recent years.
It’s part of a pattern of Trump’s renovations remaking Washington, and sometimes not in a good way.
“The damage to the garden comes at a time when Washington’s monuments, memorials and public spaces have become a major focus of President Donald Trump’s efforts to reshape and restore the nation’s capital under the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Act of 2026,” Newsweek reported of the renovations.
