According to the White House, First Lady Melania Trump will not attend Friday’s rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the makeup event for an April gathering that was evacuated after a gunman armed with guns and knives rushed the security checkpoint in what authorities describe as an assassination attempt against Trump and other officials present.
The White House confirmed her absence Thursday, telling Fox News Digital it came down to “prior commitments.” Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are skipping too, with Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance having just welcomed their fourth child. The new venue is the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, a building Trump’s company once owned as the Trump International Hotel before selling it in 2021.
There was more going on than a venue change.
Since April, the threat environment surrounding the Trump family has intensified. Billboards appeared above a highway in Tehran showing Melania, Ivanka Trump and Barron Trump with their eyes closed and visible bruising beneath them, each labeled “killed” in English, alongside the message: “Hey, terrorist. Get ready to die.”

It’s one reason security looks very different this time.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran said advance teams have already gone through the new venue and built a security plan from scratch.
“That’s sometimes what people don’t understand. If we didn’t need the magnetometers, we wouldn’t set them up,” he said, referring to reports that metal detectors were being removed from the Hilton’s checkpoint area at the exact moment the gunman broke through in April.
“We do expect bad people to show up. It’s just a reality of where we are.”
Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said officials aren’t approaching Friday as if they’re simply finishing what was interrupted. “We’re not looking at this as a redo of a dinner,” he said. “We’re looking at this as a presidential site with cabinet members and other protectees there, just like every site we do everywhere we go.”
The venue itself reflects that approach. The Waldorf ballroom will host about 1,300 guests, roughly half the size of the crowd the dinner usually attracts.
Even with the smaller guest list, organizers say the purpose of the evening hasn’t changed. WHCA President Weijia Jiang described the dinner as more than a postponed social event.
“This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program,” she said. “It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence. As you have all demonstrated, courage and community can and should rise above.”
That message, however, hasn’t convinced everyone in the press corps.
Hundreds of current and former journalists, joined by eight press freedom organizations, sent the WHCA a letter this month calling for a tougher response to the administration. The letter pointed to recent subpoenas issued against New York Times reporters covering the Qatari-gifted Air Force One story.
“We believe it is hypocritical to celebrate the First Amendment in front of the man who relentlessly attacks it,” the letter read. “We urge the WHCA to condemn the administration’s actions from the podium and pledge to fight all attempts by his administration to undermine this core pillar of a functioning democracy.”
