Disgraced ex-president Donald Trump has put this entire nation through a lot, and I do mean a lot, through the course of his four long, hard years in the White House. Frankly, the list would be endless. However, nothing was quite as terrifying as those final days he spent in office that crescendoed with him inciting his own supporters to quite literally storming this nation’s Capitol building in a last-ditch effort to stop Congress from certifying the Electoral College votes in favor of President Joe Biden.

That fateful day in January will forever go down in history as the day the United States of America came scarily close to living in a world overrun by a maniacal dictator. And now, one reporter is speaking out on the fear she felt while reporting on Donald J. Trump’s final few days in office.

Speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper, reporter Susan Glasser discussed her recent piece with the New Yorker, in which she covered the no former president’s fights with General Mark Milley in the final weeks of his presidential term. Glasser explained to the CNN host how unprecedented it was for American military leaders to genuinely view the sitting United States president and commander-in-chief as a potential threat to national security.

“You know, when I first learned about the level of alarm that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs had through the election and all the way into January, I have to say it was probably the most terrified I’ve ever been as a reporter in several decades,” Glasser, who has reported from the pits of war in Afghanistan and Iraq explained.

She went on to talk of her relief to see that Milley and other top military commanders had done their damndest to keep an unhinged Trump in check as he came to the realization that this was over for him, but how terrified she was as she came to understand just how far Donald Trump was willing to go to stay in power.

“It was extremely alarming,” Glasser recalled. “On the one hand I suppose it’s reassuring to understand that we have a class of generals at the very top rank who really do worship, I believe, the Constitution… but this is unprecedented stuff.”
