It’s long been common knowledge that Donald Trump has quite the love affair with fast food. In fact, at one point, a couple of his aides claimed that the now-ex-president’s four major food groups were McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza, and Diet Coke. But apparently, Trump’s adoration of fast food goes farther than simply eating Big Macs for lunch on the regular, as a new report alleges that Donald’s aides had to placate him with McDonald’s as they told him to get his act together and stop his bitching after he lost the 2016 Iowa caucuses to then-Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

In a definite oral history of how Donald Trump garnered control over the Republican party, Business Insider spoke with Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said they had to placate the soon-to-be president over a meal of McDonald’s in New Hampshire after he lost the 2016 Iowa caucuses to Ted Cruz.

“I called the grown children — Don, Eric, and Ivanka — told them what was happening, brought Mr. Trump in, and, over a meal of McDonald’s in the back room of our Manchester office, told him that if he wants to continue to bitch about the results in Iowa and not lay out his vision for what he wanted to achieve for America to the people in New Hampshire, this race was over,” Lewandowski said.

“It was a very candid conversation, it was just he and I in the room,” the former campaign manager revealed. “He listened intently. You walked out of that room. He went to a town-hall meeting with CNN that afternoon and Manchester. He came and ran a positive message.”

Trump certainly didn’t keep his rage a secret after he lost Iowa to Cruz back in 2016. He ended up giving us a terrifying preview of what his behavior would be like when he lost the 2020 election as he accused his 2016 Republican opponent of fraud.

“Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wrong and why he got far more votes than anticipated. Bad!” Trump raged in a February 2016 tweet.

Trump, of course, spent the remainder of the 2016 election cycle attacking Cruz in some of the lowest blows he could muster, including lobbing nasty insults as Cruz’s wife and father — only for Cruz to almost immediately turn into a blubbering Trump sycophant after Donald’s 2016 win, prompting Insider’s deep dive into the control Donald Trump rapidly gained over the GOP.
